The scenic drive to Cradle Mountain will captivate you with a changing scene around every corner. The seasons will allow you to feast your eyes on the changing colours of our range of deciduous trees, from golden hues to bright and colourful reds.
Cradle Mountain is one of the most photographed sites in Australia. It is in the Tasmanian World Heritage Wilderness area and about ¼ of all visitors to Tasmania make this a priority to visit. It is a Tasmanian icon and experiencing this is a must for all travellers. The sun’s rays will entertain you with an ever changing vista.
Austrian born Gustav Weindorfer was inspired by the sheer magnificence of this area and he built a chalet out of King Billy pine in 1912. The Waldheim Chalet is open for viewing.
The moderate walk around Dove Lake (about 1 – 2 hours) at the foot of the Cradle Mountain will give you different impressions and different photographic viewpoints. You can enjoy the serenity and the cool crisp mountain air as you circumnavigate this lake. There are other walks to enjoy including a shorter walk of about 20 minutes.
If you are interested in the natural history of the National Park, you will enjoy the displays and interpretation at the Visitor Centre nearby.
On the return trip we will stop at the Trowunna Wildlife Park, a family attraction at Mole Creek. This is one of the best places to see Tasmanian devils, wombats, koalas, spotted quolls and wallabies. There are also interactive tours where you can experience Tasmanian devils being hand-fed or even hold a baby wombat.
